April is Caesarean Section Awareness Month

Caesarean sections are the most common surgical procedure in the United States with 1.3 million per year, numbers that have tripled since the 1990’s. C-sections happen for many reasons, planned or unplanned. Reasons may include a birth plan between the mother and doctor, concerns for mother or baby, labor isn’t progressing, breech position, multiples, diabetes, hypertension, infection or many other reasons. The ultimate goal during delivery is a healthy mom and baby.

C-sections are considered major abdominal surgeries, with eight layers of tissue impacted from skin to uterus. After any major surgery that impacts muscle tissue and function physical therapy is recommended, consider a hip, knee or shoulder replacement. However, very few women that experience C-sections are referred to physical therapy. Physical therapy should start within the first three weeks post c-section to begin monitoring for signs of skin irritation and infection, screen for postpartum depression, monitor vitals, discuss ways to decrease sensitivity to the skin surrounding the tissue, begin early mobilization of your body and create a plan to help you reach your goals.

Early movement postpartum has been proven to be beneficial in many ways:

  • Starting to learn and trust your body again

  • Decrease postpartum feelings of isolation

  • Improve sleep quality

In 2015 The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists published an article stating that women with no significant complications may return to physical exercise as early as a few days postpartum and pelvic floor exercises could be safely initiated immediately postpartum. In 2021, this evidence was again supported by Nygaard et al stating rapid resumption of physical activity had no adverse effects. Physical Therapy can assist you with creating a routine that is safe and effective for you.

C-section scars can still have an impact many years down the line, if you are experiencing chronic limitations or low back pain it may be time to start working through scar tissue and improving strength through the abdomen.
